Textual Analysis of 3 Videos- (Heartlight) (You and Me) and (Latch)

Genre conventions

The style of the characters is all dressed in quite a unique retro quite of look. I see this in all of the 3 videos as they are all the same genre and therefore reflect the same genre conventions. They are verisimilitude as you can relate it to real life. This is because the narrative in all is about being, falling or any aspect to do with love. From the target audience mainly being teenagers they can really relate to this as at this stage in their life they are beginning to fall in love or desireto be. Furthermore the characters are also represented as a young couple (boy and girl). This again links in with the whole target audience and them relating to the situation. Furthermore it looks more appealing if we have a young good looking boy and girl. Because if it was an average aged man and women it wouldn’t fit into the conventions of this genre.

Formal conventions

The editing is created to the time of the beat in the music. Additionally the cuts are speeded up when the music speeds up to. This is to engage the viewer in and let them feel as if they are there in the action with them. Furthermore it just makes the video seem more real as it is going along with the music.

The cinematography represents the genre as when the music speeds up so does the use of cinematography. For example when the music is calm the shots will be slow and steady. Whereas when the music picks up steadicam is used, and the shots become quicker. Furthermore close ups are used to represent the emotion and feeling the characters are experiencing. This makes it more appealing for the audience.

The use of mise en scene represents the mood of the genre by the styles of clothing, the setting they are in, the use of props and lighting. All of these aspects help reflect the mood of the genre making it easier for the viewer to understand and engage with.
